The Boone Hills Mine is roughly 30 acres of vacant wooded land northwest of Bannister and Holmes. The site of a former JC Nichols limestone quarry, this brownfield industrial site has proven difficult to redevelop due to extensive undermining and sinkholes. The Boone Hills Mine is currently owned and managed by the Kansas City Land Bank.

Unfortunately, this property tends to be a source of blight for the neighborhood, with homeless camps, dumping, and hazardous fires occurring here frequently. Residents and businesses near the mine have had to deal with theft, breaking and entering, drug activity, vandalism, and other issues originating from this site. At the same time, the property is a large urban green space with unique possibilities for environmental restoration and adaptive reuse.

The Boone Hills Neighborhood Association is committed to advocating for responsible management of the site, and supports exploring ways to improve this area as a community amenity.

If you owned a 30 acre abandoned mine, what would you do with it?
